Before making our way to Mt. Angel, we stopped in Portland for breakfast at our favorite Vietnamese ɓǎɲ mî sandwich shop, Lee’s Sandwiches. We absolutely love Lee’s Sandwiches! Whenever we have an opportunity to grab one of their sandwiches, we don’t hesitate to do so. When we are traveling to Disneyland or Las Vegas, we always make sure to stop by Lee’s. Not only are their sandwiches great, but their coffee is also fantastic. Mumzies also likes their deli manjoo, which are like Japanese tayaki (small waffle shaped like a fish, filled with a crème filling). At Lee’s they have a machine making them fresh, right in front of you.
Our first stop in Mt. Angel was at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm. The fields were full of beautiful tulips. It is especially how they planted sections of the fields in different colors. It gives a nice depth perception and rainbow effect to the farm. It also really makes a nice backdrop for some excellent pictures. The farm has really added fun attractions for the kids. It has been probably fifteen years since our last visit to the farm. Well done Wooden Shoe! A common sense tip to anyone planning on going out to the farm, make sure to take an old pair of shoes or boots to walk the fields. It is very muddy out on the farm, especially if there has been any recent rain (which is essentially 100% guaranteed).
When we finished up at the farm, we headed into downtown Mt. Angel to walk around and see the shops. The town is cute, it’s a smaller version of our Washington Bavarian village of Leavenworth. You can watch our Leavenworth video here. There is a big restaurant called the Glockenspiel which looks really nice. Too bad we filled up on Lee’s, or else we would have eaten at the Glockenspiel. Oh well, it gives us a reason to return to Mt. Angel. We did manage to pick up some good looking German food at the Mt. Angel Sausage Company. We bought some sausage, red cabbage, and fondue to prepare at home. It looks like it will make for a delicious meal.
We had a very nice day in Mt. Angel. Fortunately, we were well prepared with our boots to wear out on the farm. The weather cooperated and was only a partly cloudy day… we’ll gladly take it.
